Who Assesses Child Support?

Services Australia (Child Support) administers the child support scheme. They:

  • Make assessments
  • Collect payments (if requested)
  • Enforce payment
  • Handle changes

    The Assessment Process

    Step 1: Application

Either parent can apply. You'll need:

  • Tax file numbers
  • Children's birth certificates
  • Care arrangement details
  • Income information

    Step 2: Gathering Income

Services Australia gets income from the ATO. For the current year, they may estimate or you can provide evidence.

    Step 3: Calculation

Using the child support formula based on:

  • Both parents' incomes
  • Number and ages of children
  • Care percentage for each parent

    Step 4: Notification

Both parents receive an assessment notice showing:

  • How much is payable
  • When payments are due
  • How it was calculated

    Income for Child Support

    What's Included

    - Taxable income

  • Reportable fringe benefits
  • Certain tax-free pensions
  • Net rental income
  • Partnership/trust distributions

    What's Excluded

    - Actual child support received

  • Certain government payments

    Self-Support Amount

A basic amount is deducted before calculating. For 2025, this is $29,212.

    Care Percentage

How much time each parent has the children:

  • 0-13%: No cost reduction
  • 14-34%: 24% reduction
  • 35-47%: 25% + 2% per percentage point over 34%
  • 48-52%: No child support (equal care)
  • 53%+: Reverses (other parent pays)

    Changing Your Assessment

    Automatic Reassessment

    - Each new financial year

  • When circumstances change (new income info)

    Application for Change

    Apply if circumstances change:

  • Income changes
  • Care changes
  • New children
  • Other relevant changes

    Private Arrangements

You can have a private agreement instead of Services Australia collecting, but the assessment still applies. Be careful - informal arrangements aren't legally enforceable.
