How Ohio Calculates Child Support
Ohio Child Support Calculation Process
- Determine each parent's gross income
- Add incomes together for combined gross income
- Find the basic child support obligation on the schedule
- Allocate obligation proportionally based on each parent's income
- Add health insurance and childcare costs (split proportionally)
- Apply any deviation factors (shared parenting, special needs, etc.)
Ohio publishes a detailed child support schedule that shows the basic obligation based on combined income and number of children. This schedule is periodically updated.
Ohio-Specific Rules
- Uses Income Shares model with published schedule
- Guidelines are updated periodically with new income tables
- Shared parenting deviation applies at 90+ overnights
- Support continues until age 18 or high school graduation (up to age 19)
- Courts can deviate from guidelines for good cause
- Self-support reserve protects obligor's ability to meet basic needs
Factors in Ohio Child Support
Combined Gross Income
Ohio uses both parents' gross incomes to determine the basic child support schedule amount.
Number of Children

Parenting Time
Ohio provides a deviation of 10% for 90+ overnight visits and up to 50% for equal parenting time.
Health Insurance Costs
The cost of health insurance for the children is added to the basic obligation and divided.
Childcare Expenses
Work-related childcare costs are added to support and allocated between parents.
Cash Medical Support
If a child isn't covered by either parent's insurance, cash medical support may be ordered.
